A civilização ocidental construiu-se assente em padrões masculinos, muito devido ao pensamento clássico e judaico, e tendo por base a ideia de que a maldade e o perigo são inerentes à mulher. Para a eternização desta mentalidade muito contribuíram os homens que salvaguardavam, desse modo, os seus privilégios. Apesar dos movimentos feministas do início do séc. XX, a situação social da mulher nesse período pouco se alterou, e as mulheres de Ferreira de Castro, isto é, as personagens femininas dos seus romances, correspondem realisticamente aos padrões da época. Este artigo tenta analisar alguns desses tipos.

Western civilisation was built on masculine standards, largely due to classical and Jewish thinking, and based on the idea that evil and danger are inherent to women. Men contributed greatly to the eternalisation of this mentality, thereby safeguarding their privileges. Despite the feminist movements of the early 20th century, the social situation of women in this period remained virtually unchanged, and Ferreira de Castro's women, i.e. the female characters in his novels, realistically correspond to the standards of the time. This article attempts to analyse some of these types.
